| Research

Multiple studies are currently in place to study the effects of weightlifting in children.
The topics of study concern strength and flexibility gains, injuries and the effects of Olympic
lifting on growth plates of prepubescent males.
|
Spencer M. Wheeler, M.D., a native Savannahan, graduated from the University of Georgia School of Pharmacy
before receiving his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Wheeler completed his Internship
and Residency training at the University of Florida. He then completed Sports Medicine Fellowships in
Baltimore, Maryland and Sydney, Australia. Dr. Wheeler was one of the founding Sports Medicine physicians
in Savannah and maintains an active role in local, state, national and international Sports Medicine. In
addition, he maintains an active involvement with Olympic and professional athletes as well as local ?weekend
warriors?. He currently is the team physician for Armstrong Atlantic State University, Savannah College of
Art and Design, and several local high school programs. Dr. Wheeler specializes in Arthroscopy of the shoulder
and knee, but also continues to treat general Orthopaedic problems. His civic involvement includes active
Board membership on the Savannah Sports Council, the Armstrong Atlantic State University Foundation , and
Team Savannah. He has previously served on the Board of Directors for the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce
and the Savannah Olympic Sports Council Executive Committee.
